INVESTIGATING 2 DIGIT NUMBERS

We have been investigating two digit numbers.
Our investigations have lead us to explore not just how many TENS and ONES make up a particular number but also how we can make that number in other ways by regrouping the TENS and ONES.

OUR KANDINSKY PICS

We have been investigating 2D and 3D shapes.

Mrs M told us about a Russian artist called Kandinsky. His art is called Abstract art.

He uses lots of 3D and 2D shapes.

We made our own Kandinsky-like pictures to demonstrate our learning of 2D and 3D shapes. Our drawings also include straight lines, curved lines, open shapes and closed shapes just like Kandinsky.

DAY 10 - ZERO THE HERO's FIRST VISIT

On Tuesday we had ZERO THE HERO visit our classroom.

WHY?

Because it was DAY 10 of the school year!

ZERO THE HERO visited because we are counting up to the 100th day of school. He's going to help us count in tens, visiting us every '10' days until we reach the '100th' day, when we'll have a big celebration.

ZERO is going to help us understand place value and the important role 'zero' has in a number.

This was ZERO THE HERO's first visit, so he told us a little about himself, not by speaking but through strange looking designs called 'qr codes'. We needed MRs M's iphone to scan and read the codes. One of the codes had a link to ZERO THE HERO's favourite video -' ZERO, MY HERO'.

When ZERO visits, we have special activities that help us count in tens.

DAY 10 - A 'ZERO THE HERO' DAY!

We are counting up to the 100th day of school, so ZERO THE HERO came to help us understand place value and the important role 'zero' has in a number. He's going to help us count in tens, visiting us every '10' days until we reach the '100th' day and then we'll have a big celebration.

This was ZERO'S first visit so we watched his favourite video to learn a little more about why the number ZERO is a HERO.

We are really excited about ZERO visiting us again in another 10 days. Now there are only 90 days until DAY 100.

IT'S DAY 60 ALREADY!

It's hard to believe that it's 10 days since Zero the Hero's last visit and that it's now DAY 60!

We are working with big numbers now, so Zero gave us 'numeral expanders' to help us understand 'place value'.

We rolled special 'tens' and 'ones' dice
and used blocks or paddlepop stickes to represent what we had rolled.

Then we checked how many bundles of ten and loose ones we had and recorded it on our numeral expander.

We could then fold the numeral expander in to see the 2 digit number we had made.

With a numeral expander, we can easily check the value of each digit.

LINE SYMMETRY

We have started investigating symmetry.

You can find symmetry all around you in nature,

buildings and constructions

and art.

We learnt that something has symmetry when you can fold it in half and both the sides match.

You can have vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines of symmetry.

HALF WAY TO 100!

Friday was DAY 50!

We can't believe that we are halfway to DAY 100!

We knew ZERO the HERO would have something exciting for us to do on this special day.

He's obviously been watching what we've been doing, because he had lots of 'crafty' minibeasts for us to use.

And what did we do with these 'minibeasts'?

Put them into collections of 50, of course!

We used mini pompoms to make caterpillars with 50 segments to their body.

We created pictures using 50 dragonflies, butterflies or bees.

There was LOTS of counting and sorting into 5 groups of 10.

As a special treat, ZERO the HERO left a Magic School Bus DISCOVERING BUGS video for us to watch.

IT'S A 'ZERO' DAY

It was another 'ZERO the HERO' day today - DAY 40!

'ZERO' had lots of equipment for us to bundle, link, stack and arrange into groups of 10.

It didn't matter which equipment we used, we all used the same process.

We counted in ones or twos to make groups of 10. We had 4 groups.

Then we counted each group...10, 20 ,30, 40...

4 groups of 10 is 40!

Next we rotated through activities where we worked with '40'.

One of the activities was the 'Make and Take' game. For the first part of the game we rolled a dice and added paddlepop sticks to the ONES house on our chart. When we could make a ten, we bundled them up and put them in the TENS house. The first one to 40 was the winner.

For the second part, when we rolled the dice, we had to 'unbundle' the groups of TEN. The first one back to ZERO was the winner.

Other activities had us being CREATIVE with 40.

We could use the coloured matchsticks to make a picture, or the wooden shapes to create a design or construct something out of Lego.... but we could only use 40 pieces!

We LOVE 'ZERO THE HERO' DAYS.

ARE WE TALKING GOBBLEYGOOK?

NO!!

It's just the language of direction and movement.

Today we played the game 'LADYBUG MAZE' to

help us practise giving directions with 'right angle turns'.

After 'programming' the ladybug to hide behind a leaf and find her way through many mazes, we decided it would be fun to write a 'program' to help a classmate get back to their desk.

We marked a spot at the front of the room with a 'cross' and off we went!

Were we running around in circles?

NO!!!

Mrs M was AMAZED at how accurate our 'programs' were!

We all made it back to our desks and some of us discovered we could get there more quickly if we turned diagonally - we learnt that was a 45 degree turn!

WE DIDN'T KNOW THAT WAS MATHS!!

To help us read and interpret maps, we have been investigating position, location and movement.

We found that to give accurate directions we not only needed to state left or right, we also needed to to understand and use the terms

* 1/4 turn

* 1/2 turn

* 3/4 turn and

* full turn

Last week, when we were learning about 'right angles', Isaac made the connection between a 'right angle' and a '1/4 turn'.

Because we thought all the 'right angles' we found around the room were different sizes, Mrs M introduced us to the measurement for a 'right angle' - 90 degrees.

As you can see from the picture, this information started a 'huge' discussion, where the boys, especially Tyler, realised that they had been using the language of angles when skateboarding. They understood that a '360',is a full turn, a 'half 360' or a '180' is a half turn but now they know that they are 'working mathematically' when skateboarding!

OUR 'TIME' VOICETHREAD

We hope you learn lots about time.
We certainly did.

MATHS WITH MR V

Today we had Mr V, a visiting maths specialist, in our classroom for Numeracy Block. He helped us investigate 'TIME'. There were also 8 other teachers in our room to watch Mr V teaching us.

For one of the activities, we were asked to draw a parent, a baby, a child in primary school, a grandparent and a teenager. We had to write what ages we thought they were and put them in order from youngest to oldest.

The movie below shows how Isaac, Patrick and Ben D responded to this task.

Mr V spent a whole hour in our room and we had lots of fun. We will have a Voicethread ready tomorrow to show all that we did and our thinking about 'TIME'.

(This activity gave an interesting insight into the children's perception of 'age'. There was a lively discussion during the 'sharing time' at the end of the lesson about how old a 'baby' is. The other stage that showed up some interesting ages was that of 'grandparents'.... I'm a bit worried about looking 80!

It was wonderful to have the opportunity to fully listen and observe the children at work and the Voicethread tomorrow will let you in on some of the rich conversation that took place.)

USING BASE 10 BOARDS

Mrs H from Catholic Education visited our blog this week. She LOVES Maths and left a comment on our post about Zero the Hero.

Mrs H thought we were clever to use the Base 10 boards to count out 20 lollies for our bracelets and asked,

'Will they be useful when we get to DAY 30?'

OF COURSE!

In fact they will be useful when we get to DAY 100 - we'll just need '10' of them!

VOICES of the WORLD - FEBRUARY TASK

February's task for VOICES OF THE WORLD was to use PHOTOSTORY to make a video of the numbers 1 to 10.

We had to have a title page saying 'numbers' and then a page for each number 1 to 10.
As an option, we could sing 'Ten Little Teddy Bears' at the end.


There were lots of ways that we could show the numbers.

We discussed using our bodies, drawing them in Kid Pix, using collections of objects or taking photos of numbers around our school.



We didn't end up going with any of these.

So how did we show the numbers?

DAY 20 FUN

It's Day 20 of school-

and that means....

ZERO the HERO came to visit!

He brought with him a BIG container of lollies - lollies that could be threaded to make bracelets!



First we had to count out 20 lollies using Base 10 boards.
Then we checked we had 20 by counting in tens.

The Base 10 boards make it easy to see that 20 is 'two' groups of 10.

Then came the tricky part - the threading!Again we used the Base 10 boards to keep track of how many we had threaded and how many we still had to go.


Before long we each had one VERY yummy bracelet!
