PANCAKE DAY 2011

Today was SHROVE TUESDAY.
Depending on where you are in the world, it is also known as PANCAKE DAY, PANCAKE TUESDAY, FAT TUESDAY or MARDI GRAS.zwani.com myspace graphic comments

Shrove Tuesday is celebrated on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of the church season of LENT

In earlier days there were many foods that Christians would not eat during Lent like meat and fish, eggs, and milk, flour and butter
To stop food being wasted, families would have a feast on the day before Ash Wednesday, and eat up all the foods that wouldn't last the forty days of Lent.

To celebrate SHROVE TUESDAY, we made pancakes - the EASY way.
This is what we needed:
EQUIPMENT-

  • a frypan
  • measuring jug
  • spatula
INGREDIENTS -
  • Pancake Shake
  • 1 3/4 cups water
  • cooking spray
  • our favourite topping - we used Golden Syrup

Do you know the steps we took to make the pancakes?
Watch our ANIMOTO to find out how easy it can be to make pancakes.

Our Year 7's, along with some parent helpers, spent the morning cooking pancakes in our new canteen. They raised over $400 from the sale of pancakes, which will go to Caritas to help needy communities in Nepal.

We enjoyed making pancakes and enjoyed eating them even more!

How did you celebrate PANCAKE DAY?
What's your favourite topping?
Please tell us in a comment. We'd love to know

PANCAKE TUESDAY FUN

Last Tuesday was SHROVE TUESDAY.
It is also known as PANCAKE TUESDAY.

Shrove Tuesday is the last day before LENT. There were many foods that the early Christians didn't eat during Lent - foods like meat and fish, eggs, and milk, flour and butter. Instead of wasting food, families would have a feast on the Shrove Tuesday, and use up all the foods that wouldn't last the forty days of Lent.

We decided to made pancakes - the EASY way.
All you need is: a frypan, a spatula, Pancake Shake mix, water, cooking oil or spray and your favourite topping, which for us was Mrs Knee's maple syrup.

We've learnt that maple syrup has been something that has connected the 'Gems' to Mrs Knee for the last two years and we agree with the 2008 and 2009 Gems - it's the BEST maple syrup ever!

NOW WE UNDERSTAND

Two weeks ago, when we made pancakes, a comment from Mrs Knee and the Kinderkids had us talking.

Here's part of it-

'In a few more weeks we will be making maple syrup at my house. The weather has to change a bit before we can tap the trees. We need freezing nights and warm days.'

We discussed what 'tap the trees' meant. This was something that none of us had experienced. Johanna suggested that they pushed a 'tap' into the tree to let the syrup out.

Yesterday Mrs M found this slideshow on the Kinderkids blog. We were 'spot on' with our thinking!

Now we know how 'real' maple syrup is collected . We never imagined we'd learn 'that' this year. That's what's so cool about having blogging buddies around the world - we learn such interesting things! - but we're wondering...

What does 'sugar on snow' taste like?
